All About the “AoW”
You will be responsible for reading and responding to our ‘Article of the Week’ every week (or as often as I hand them out). I will give you ONE copy of the article. If you lose it, you can download it here on this page.
Why are we doing this? Because in addition to reading novels and stories, it is equally important to be able to read and interpret non-fiction pieces - especially short articles that give us news and information about our world.
When we watch video, it is a much more passive activity - it happens to you and you absorb it. Reading is active - the reader must interact with the text, process it and think about what it means and why it matters. When you read you must read closely and interpret each sentence OR YOU ARE JUST STARING AT WORDS. Reading is a skill and the more you practice it, the better you become at doing it, and the more you will enjoy it. Few people enjoy playing a musical instrument at first - learning scales is boring. But once the player becomes fluid, that’s when the music starts and a lifetime of musical creativity unfolds before your eyes. Reading is a lot like that - but first you have to practice those scales!
